Travellers Rest

Where the hills meet, splitting the mysterious Blackmore Vale from the ancient Cranborne Chase, the River Stour carves its way through the chalk. Sitting above the valley is Travellers Rest, hidden amongst the interlocking slopes scarred with ancient fields. A stopping place for generations of Romaine gypsies, the tracks and trails that mark the landscape were once important roads. Wander along the ancient routes strengthened by both trade and religion while determined by river crossings. Follow a failed turnpike hidden in woodland, and trace the medieval paths which linked the fields and farms. Return via new roads designed, and cut off, by the Lords of Bryanston and Milton Abbey to preserve their privacy, with a bridge being built for this purpose. Pass Victorian model farms, sticking to the hilltop, with views over the town of Blandford Forum to the tree topped hillforts of Buzbury and Badbury Rings.
