From Christchurch’s Saxon walls, follow the River Avon beneath railway bridges and past ancient mills. Cross the water using the historic sluice gates at Knapp Mill, entering the vast, open landscape of Winkton Common. Loop around the village of Burton, passing thatched cottages straight out of fairytales, and once home to the author of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Cut through the village green to rejoin the Avon Valley Path as it edges back towards the bustle of town. Return via the A35, crossing the River Avon for the second time, and its wildlife-rich island, which is even home to deer despite the encroaching town.
