From deep within the roots of the ancient Selwood Forest, wander a landscape that shaped Iron Age tribes, settling Saxons, and the counties of Wessex. Drop down into the valley of the River Stour, joining its short course through Wiltshire to the possible site of Egbert’s Stone, marking the point where three counties meet. Follow the water’s flow past the remains of a Norman castle and old mills, sitting alongside the lakes that fed their work. Cross the border into Dorset and the little village of Bourton, still decorated by the old mill’s endeavours. Follow the county boundary along an old drove road to the ruins of another motte-and-bailey, its earthworks rising from the ground like a sleeping giant. Return to Penselwood, skimming the lost pub and village pump, with wide views west over Somerset.
