Badbury Rings beech tree avenue. The old Kingston Lacy drive is one of the most iconic scenes of Dorset. The towering trees, which meet high in the middle of the road, were planted in 1835 by William John Bankes. In total originally 731 trees stretched over 2 and half miles, 365 one side, 366 the other, each tree representing one day of the year.
Skim the southern corner of the Kingston Lacy estate, walking between the historically feuding neighbour's land of the Bankes and the Charboroughs. Explore the medieval routes that once connected the estates to the surrounding landscape. Walk through the beech tree avenue, one of the most iconic scenes in the county, to reach Badbury Rings. Follow the footsteps of Celtic tribes on the hillfort's ramparts, Roman soldiers along their numerous ancient roads and the Britons that fought with King Arthur against the invading Saxons, all under the watchful eye of a goddess in the form of a raven. Return to the estate passing the medieval hunting lodge, sitting on the old deer park boundary, and the new lodge that guards the western edge of the estate.
